Club Meeting: Caring for Special Needs Donkeys at Oregon Donkey Sanctuary

Jim Urquhart from the Donkey Sanctuary of Oregon will present on Caring for Special Needs Donkeys at Oregon Donkey Sanctuary. Since 2006, Jim and his wife Rhonda have transformed their 40-acre farm into a sanctuary for neglected and abused donkeys. They established Oregon Donkey Sanctuary Northwest in 2021, providing lifelong care for special needs donkeys with the help of dedicated volunteers. Each donkey has a unique story and personality, and the sanctuary aims to educate people on proper care and advance the status of donkeys. The ultimate goal is to create an equine therapy program named Pearl's Place, in memory of their beloved matriarch Pearl.

Jim Urquhart from the Donkey Sanctuary of Oregon will present on Caring for Special Needs Donkeys at Oregon Donkey Sanctuary. In 2006, Jim and Rhonda Urquhart moved to Oregon City from Arizona, inspired by the braying of a neighboring donkey. This curiosity led them to offer their 40-acre farm as a satellite facility for Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue, fostering and adopting out neglected and abused donkeys. By 2021, their dedication to special needs donkeys led to the establishment of Oregon Donkey Sanctuary Northwest. With the help of a dedicated volunteer network, the Urquharts have managed the remarkable responsibility of providing daily care and furthering their mission.

Each donkey at the sanctuary has a unique personality and story, often marked by past neglect or abuse. The sanctuary emphasizes the gentle nature and wonderful personalities of donkeys, aiming to advance their status and teach humans how to care for them. The ultimate goal is to build an equine therapy program named Pearl’s Place, in memory of their matriarch Pearl, to further the healing process for both donkeys and humans.
